anticipating our next book
2. If you are in a position of power, you are happy.
8. If something is destined to happen, it will happen without your interference.
In the first statement, I strongly disagree because I do not believe that being in a position of power will cause someone to be happy. I believe this because having a higher power does not directly correlate to how happy someone is. I believe that many other things, like one’s faith, friends, or family, can contribute to one’s happiness. I know that some people believe that money and power will give someone happiness, but once they get that money and power, they just want more. This shows how greedy someone is since even after they receive the money and power they wished for, they still aren’t happy.
I disagree with this next statement as well because I believe that even if something is destined to happen, doesn’t mean that our decisions will not affect this event. For example, if you are destined to go to college, meaning your parents went and they are expecting the same of you, but you decide to slack off in school, then you won’t go to college. This shows that even though someone may be predetermined to do something, doesn't mean your actions won’t get in the way of this event.
hits and misses
Throughout this year, I have had many pieces of writing that I have enjoyed doing and done well in, but I have also had several pieces of work that were not that fun for me to do and that I did not do so good on. One of my writings that I did not enjoy was my research paper. I waited to almost the last minute to pick my topic, so my topic did not interest me that much. This made it harder to enjoy working on this project and since I didn’t want research my subject, I did not learn as much from this project. I struggled with finding reliable sources and the hardest part was annotating those sources. Although I had trouble and did not enjoy doing some projects this year, I did enjoy doing some.
My favorite writing project this year was my free post blog post about Big Brother. I really enjoyed this assignment because I got to choose the topic and it was shorter than a true paper, but long enough to thoroughly express all of my ideas. I really enjoyed writing this post and felt like I could practice my writing skills. Overall, this year I have grown as a writer by learning from my good and bad writing projects.

prompt- Where do you want to go to college?
My ideas and interests may change in the future, but currently I want to be a biomedical engineer. A biomedical engineer is in both the engineering field and the medical field. Biomedical engineers work with doctors to research and develop new and more advanced technology in order to solve clinical problems. They make things like artificial organs and prosthetic limbs, and they also make things like computer programming systems that diagnose patients more accurately and faster. This field has always interested me, even though I have just recently learned the name of the field. I have always loved math and science, so I knew I wanted to go into either the engineering field or the medical field, so biomedical engineering is perfect for me since it touches on all of my interests.
This profession requires up to a master's degree, but I am very interested in getting a PhD. To receive my bachelor's degree, I will probably go to LSU honors college on tops for four years and major in general engineering. Then, I will go to Georgia Technical Institute to receive my master's degree. I will go here for two years and major in biomedical engineering and minor in computer programming. Then I will attend John Hopkins University for my PhD. The average time it takes to get a PhD is 8 years, but my goal is to do it in only 4 years.

reading strategies
Throughout this challenging novel of Purple Hibiscus, I have learned many reading strategies to fully understand the text and remain completely interested in the novel. One thing that helps me is annotating. This helps me to not only remember my ideas about the book, but it makes me really think about what the author is trying to portray through the text. I like to highlight important phrases and concepts, and I also like to highlight quotes that I really like. Then, I write out my ideas about the highlighted portions in the margins. This helps me to really read the novel instead of just skimming over the text and not truly understanding what the author is trying to portray.
The only problems I have had is missing some of the thing that are important throughout the text. I usually get most to all of the important details, but I do miss some sometimes. When this happens, it's not a big deal at all because we go over the major ideas in class. It helps to talk about the ideas we noticed in our tables, but the formal discussions help the most. This helps for me to realize new ideas and different sides to some of the concepts throughout the novel.

political article - gun control
Echoes of Gunfire Hurt Tender N.R.A. Ears by the New York Times
In this article, it talks about how police use the sound of guns to track where there is a possible crime so they can be more efficient when it comes to crimes with guns, but the National Rifle Association wants to allow more gun owners to own gun silencers because they claim that gun sounds are a public health hazard. Even though, there are around 30,000 or more deaths caused from gun violence, yet that is only a small fraction of total guns that have been shot, but stopped by police before anyone was hurt or killed. The police are able to stop these crimes because of the loud sounds they make, so if everyone had gun silencers, it would be a lot harder to find the shooter before someone got hurt or was killed. Currently, there is a $200 tax and a vetting period to get a silencer, but most gun owners are trying to annul this tax. A bill has been made to get rid of this tax and if it passes, silencers will be much more attainable for everyone, which may help to muffle the gun shots of a deadly shooter.
I believe that everyone should think of the true consequences this could have. I know not everyone would use the silencers for mass shootings or any deadly deeds, but some people might, and I think we have this law in place for the safety of everyone. I think that the tax and vetting period is very reasonable for someone who would only use the silencers for hunting and protecting themselves and they don't want to be a public health hazard, but some people want the silencers to get away with deadly deeds. I found this article by searching for gun control and gun safety issues because that interests me a lot more than politics. I am also really interested in gun control issues because my cousin died from staying with a family who did not properly lock up their guns and did not keep the safety on.

free post: bb7
I have recently started watching, and finishing, this show that I am obsessed with called Big Brother. I just watched season 7 all-stars and thought it was amazing. Basically big brother is a game show where a group of people, about 16 usually, are stuck in a house for the whole summer, so for about 90 days with little to no contact to the outside world. Every week, one house guest is evicted from the house, unless there is a twist, which there are many twists throughout the game. But first, the house guest compete in challenges for different prizes like head of household, a power to change the game, food, to win a veto that doesn't allow you to be eliminated, and many more. This game consists of so many twists and interesting challenges which makes this game show even more interesting to watch. There have been 18 seasons so far and they are preparing for there 19th season this summer.
In the 7th season of big brother, it is very different because instead of random people to become the house guest, the house guest consist of previous players from the past 6 seasons of Big Brother. This makes the game more interesting because these players all have amazing strategies and they all think they will know how to win because they've seen someone win in their season. If you are the last house guest in the Big Brother house, you win half a million dollars. This is the reason that this show gets pretty dramatic at times and many different alliances and feuds are formed between the house guests.

last quarter: learning reflection
Throughout this year, I have learned many new and interesting things in my academic classes and about myself. As a student, I have learned more beneficial ways to study and have become more in control with my time management skills. I have gotten better at not procrastinating near as much as I used to, and I have been spending less time on my phone during my study time. I have learned that these tactics help me, as a student, to learn more efficiently and have helped me feel more prepared for upcoming tests. Another thing I have learned is how to get into a book. In the past, it would have taken me this whole year to read one novel, and now it only takes me three quarters of the year. This is because I have learned to enjoy reading more in my free time instead of feeling it is a boring obligation to read.
Out of all the things I have learned this year, I think I have learned the most about writing. I have never necessarily been bad at writing, but I knew I could improve my writing I just never really wanted to improve. This year; however, I have learned the traits of good writing which has helped me understand the subject of writing on a whole new level. Using the knowledge I know have of what makes me a better student, I will use this information to help me become the best student that I can be. I will make better study habits, be more prepared for tests, and put in 100% effort on all the work that I do.

free post- service project
For almost a year no, I have gone to help at a nursing home on the first Sunday of each month. I usually attend with my family, but sometimes my friends will join us too. It is a service through the church I attend, Healing Place Church, and the main purpose is to brighten theses people's day. This nursing home is a little bit different than other nursing homes though because there are rarely any visitors to theses people and hardly anyone will get to go back home. Another thing is, this nursing home is for the injured and elderly, so almost everyone in this home has some kind of injury. This makes me sad that none of their family will come to visit them, but that is the reason we go.
When the group of volunteers arrive at the nursing home, I can already see most of the residents getting a brighter glow of happiness. When we are there, we celebrate the birthdays and holidays of that month and the we hold a church service that all of the residents are invited to. We hand out cupcakes and a balloon to everyone who will have a birthday over that month and will bring small decorations if there is a holiday, but my favorite part is the church service. Only a few of the residents attend, but when we hold the service, I can truly feel the presence of God and I know what I am doing may seem small compared to some of the other mission trips and service projects happening, but I can really tell that I am making other people happy which makes me happy too!

song
In the song, "I Must Belong Somewhere," by Bright Eyes, many poetic devices that we have learned in class are used throughout the lyrics. First off, euphony is used throughout the poem because it has a pleasing smoothness when you read the lyrics, for example, in the first line, "Leave the bright blue door on the white-washed wall." Another thing that I noticed when reading through these lyrics, was that the words today and remained were alternating repetition at the end of the stanzas. I perceived this as metaphors for how the artist might not want the day to change or anything that is concurring that day to change. Another thing that I noticed after reading through the song was that the title was never directly mentioned in the song. Even though the title describes the entirety of the song quite well, the phrase itself is never found in the lyrics. Another poetic device I found throughout these lyrics was the use of anaphora because phrases, such as the word leave, is found at the beginning of almost every line.
In all, the poetic devices used throughout "I Must Belong Somewhere," contribute to the message and mood of the song as a whole. The use of anaphora for the word leave in this song, would suggest that the writer is telling the reader to live and let live. This repeated phrase also has a deeper meaning for the stress on the word leave. This poetic device and the many others used throughout this song give a deeper meaning to the lyrics and help the reader to find a deeper meaning to the words. All of the poetic devices are used help the writer connect with the reader on either an understanding level or a personal level.

poem
Love is like a picnic.
It's terrible when you've been waiting for food for ages,
and your stomach starts to make an abnormal sound.
gurgle,
roar.
It's the same sound your heart makes,
when your waiting for love.
Yet it is amazing when you finally get what you've been waiting for.
Even through all the pain, and struggle,
the wait was worth it,
because what you get is more amazing than anyone could ever imagine.

vocabulary.com words story
When our character arrived at their home today, they noticed that something was off. Nothing that anyone could see, but something he could feel. Let me introduce myself before I continue in this story. I am Hank, your narrator. And my job is to tell this story to you. Anyways, back to the story. So when our character looked around the home, he suddenly felt idiotic and realized what had been wrong. His roommate was not their to greet him today. He thought it was strange, but thought nothing more of the matter. "Perhaps," he thought, "she went out to go shopping or maybe she will surprise me with something." Now, rather that being afraid, he carried on with his regular activities: finish up some work, make dinner, eat, shower, and then go to sleep. He was all ready for been when the doorbell rang. He immediately assumed it to be his roommate, but he thought, "Why would she be ringing the doorbell?" When he opened the door, the only thing there was his roommate with a bullet through her head. This was the demise, or end, of his life undercover.
Yes, you read that right, our character is an undercover agent who had been living in disguise with a roommate who was also undercover. This event let him know that they would come after him next, and that they know that him and his roommate were undercover agents. Our character then proceeded to take the bullet out of his roommates head. I know this sounds disgusting and possibly unnecessary, but by taking out the bullet, he would know who shot her. When he got the bullet, he looked at it closely and that gave him the wisdom, or accumulated knowledge, of who had shot her. It was the rebel spies, and they were about to see the worst side of him.

Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian is getting quite interesting to me. First of all, Junior officially moves to Reardan high school and on his first day, he meets Penelope. At first she seems really nice and Junior is really attracted to her, but then she gets feisty. Junior tells her his name is Junior, but when the teacher calls roll, she finds out his real name is Arnold. She gets really upset over this minor thing that wasn't even a lie because everyone called him Junior. After School started for him, he started to get bullied by one of his classmates, Roger, and he gets tired of it so Arnold punches him in the face. He expected to get beat up, since that's how things worked at his old school, but in turn Roger ran off and after that day, he started to respect him.
At school, Arnold hears a puking noise coming from the girls bathroom. He waits outside and then figures out that it was Penelope and she is proud to be bulimic. Since he knows this about her now, they become closer in a way. He then befriends Gordy, the school genius, and they have a nice discussion about how happy books can make you. He also teaches Arnold how to truly read a book and other smart things. They became friends, but not as close as Arnold and Rowdy were. When Arnold gets home, his parents tell him that his sister, Mary ran away and married some Indian in Montana. Mary sends Arnold an email, telling him all of the amazing things happening in her life and that she is truly happy in Montana.

research
So far in my research, I have become more comfortable with conducting research and I have gotten fairly good at figuring out if the source is reliable or not. I think I have learned a lot through my research project. Specifically, I have learned that it is really important to make a good and specific outline so that actually writing your paper or rough draft is a lot easier since all of your ideas are laid out in your outline. This taught me just how important each step of the writing process truly is. Another thing I have learned is citations. I have always known what citations were and briefly how to do them, but now I have learned a lot more about exactly how to write them. I previously thought you had to put the entire citation in the parentheses after every sentence, but now I know you only put the authors last name or the title of the source you are using, like so (Smith).
I may have learned a lot through this research project, but there are also some things that I still don't quite understand. One thing I still question is when to put a citation behind a sentence. I know you put them after quotes and if you were influenced by that source, but would you also put it behind like dates that are found on multiple sources? For example would you have to put a citation behind like the date of when World War II occurred? Also, I still don't know what else I could add to my conclusion. Right now it does sum up almost everything I talked about throughout my paper, but it's only a few sentences long. Does it need to be longer than that and if so, what else would I add?

free post- stranger things
On Netflix, I started to watch a show called Stranger Things, and it's probably the best show I have ever seen. It;s about this group of friends and one of them goes missing into this alternate world. It's sort of in the genre of science fiction, but it's more about the characters and the story of it all than the aliens. Will Buyers, the kid that goes missing, is stuck in this "upside down" world and his mother and Will's friends are the only ones who knows he's there.
The rest of the town thinks they are crazy for believing Will is trapped in this alternate universe. I think this must be really hard for the mother because everyone thinks she's crazy, but if I were in her situation, I think I would do anything to get to my son, even if everyone else thought I was crazy. This would be really hard especially since the sheriff, Hopper, won't help her because he doesn't believe her. This aggravates me because as the viewer, there is dramatic irony since I know where Will is, but none of the characters do.

Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian is a pretty good book so far. At the beginning I felt it was really slow and not much happened besides the introduction of characters and flashbacks. Towards the end of this part of the book it started to get interesting though. When Junior decides he is going to transfer schools to go to Reardan, Rowdy punches him because he is angry that he will be loosing his best and only friend. This part made me kind of angry that he would hurt him, but I understood why he was so upset to loose his friend especially since he has had such a rough childhood thus far.
One of my favorite characters so far is Juniors sister, Mary runs away. I really enjoyed learning about her secret desire to write romance novels, but I was sort of upset how it seemed like she lost her desire to write anymore. When Mr. P told Junior all of this I thought it was really interesting that Junior had never known about this passion of hers. I am really enjoying this book and I like getting to know the characters so far.

research project
My research project is on Sir Isaac Newton and why he is considered the greatest scientist and how he changed science. Right now my thesis is: Sir Isaac Newton has been the most influential person in the scientific world because of his countless achievements, his occasional quarrels, and an ever lasting legacy he still holds to this day. Isaac Newton is probably the scientist who has made the most achievements that we still use today out of any other scientist. Isaac Newton has had many interesting events happen throughout his career. Probably the most interesting thing I have learned about Newton thus far is his many controversies.
One of his most known controversies is his dispute over who had invented calculus. Another interesting thing I have learned is that he was not only studied math and science, but he spent most of his time researching theology. This surprised me because I had previously only thought of him as a profound mathematician and scientist. His work in Theology, however, was even more well known than his works in math and science. This is only a few of the interesting things I have learned about my research paper subject.

Last Semester
Last Semester I learned a lot. Mostly I learned that it is harder to keep up good grades in high school than in middle and elementary school. In fact, it is completely different. In middle school I would have just waited until the last minute to do everything and I would still have a good grade and wouldn't even get stressed. Now that I am in high school, I have realized that it is not good to wait to last minute or procrastinate. Instead, I try to finish all my homework the day I receive it so I won't be as stressed during my hectic weekends.
I can use this thing that I have learned last semester to help me for this semester. So far I have found that reading through my notes every night is a good way to start preparing for upcoming tests or quizzes. Also, I try to schedule my days. Every morning I try to schedule out my time evenly while keeping in mind all of the things I have to do that day. I make sure to prioritize my time starting with things that matter the most, like school, and then ending with less important things. This system is beginning to improve my grades and making sure I don't procrastinate as much.

free post- Christmas festivities
This year for Christmas it was busy, as usual. My family and I start Christmas festivities three days before Christmas and we end two days after. On Christmas eve eve eve my family and I go to my step Mom's Grandparents for dinner and presents. Then, we go to my dad's grandparents for a whole day of games and fireworks with presents of course. Then on Christmas eve we would usually go to my Dad's mom's house for lunch and a surprise activity, but this year it was at my house since her house was flooded. The surprise activity this year was going ice skating which was really fun.
Finally, on Christmas we spend time withe my Mom and most of her family. We have lunch and presents and play a game or two. The next day, we go to my step dad's family to hang out and more presents. Me and my step sister usually stay outside and play volleyball or jump on the trampoline while the other's stay inside and talk for hours. And finally on the last day of our huge Christmas, me and my sister go to my dad's house, then mom's house then step dad's house to have a small family Christmas with just the parents and siblings.

research update
My research has been going pretty well. The thing that has been going the best so far is my note cards. It is also difficult though to come up with categories and then read the source and make a main idea for it. It is also hard to write the right amount of information on the note cards. Sometimes I don't put enough detail on my cards and then other times I end up putting to many words on the card. There's a lot of information that I want to put on my note card, but I don't want it to be too wordy.
The main thing I need help on is reading my sources and picking out the most important parts of it. It is hard to evaluate the main details of the sources and not make the note card too wordy or anything. I just need some help summarizing the sources into only the parts that I need from my source for my paper. Overall, my research work is going very good with very minimal problems.
