how have your priorities changed from middle to high school

My main priority in middle school was to fit in. I was really wrapped up in what everyone else was doing and what others thought of me. I was always worried about how people might perceive me if I didn't have plans. Also,  I stressed myself out trying to make so many plans with my friends that I didn't have too much time to do homework or worry about my grades.
In high school, that has pretty much all changed. I now don;t really care about what other people think about me or what things some people say behind my back. I believe that quality is way more important than quantity when it comes to friends. Also, I always think that school should be my first priority, so I always make sure I have enough time for school work first.

writing center reflection

In the writing center, me and my writing fellow mostly worked on the introduction, conclusion, and how to make my paper flow better. We focused a lot on transitions and the best ways to introduce and then sum up my argument in paragraphs. The most helpful and surprising thing to me was when I read my paper out loud. This helped me catch a lot of mistakes in my paper before she even stated helping me. It also helped me notice the places that needed to flow and go together better.
I wrote my entire introduction and conclusion and I fixed two of my paragraphs that didn't go together with transitions. This was a really good help to me to have someone else to point me in the right direction with my paper. I was quite surprised how much she didn't actually just tell me what was wrong with my paper, but she gave me advice and questions on how I wanted to improve my paper.

free post- short story

One day, on a quite normal day, he left the store and went inside his house. He went to his bathroom and looked at himself in the mirror. She wondered what he was thinking, but she saw the anger and confusion on his face and that was all she needed to know what was happening. He saw her reflection in his mirror and quickly turned around, but she was faster and dodged his dagger eyes. The next day, she was back. He was standing on his front lawn, ready to go to school. She starred at him, and for a second, she questioned what she was about to do, but her obedient mind got the best of her and she went ahead with it.
First, he didn't even see her as she approached him. Next thing he noticed was he was lying on the ground, grasping his heart and begging her for mercy. She felt sorry for him, but went ahead, but with her eyes closed. He felt more and more limp by the second. His mother, Theresa, saw him from the window and ran outside while she called an ambulance. Theresa did not noticed her, so she found her mission completed and left him and his mother to grief. She moved and, lifeless, to her next victim, for she was the grim reaper.

literary analysis

In my literary analysis, I have found it pretty easy to develop my body paragraphs especially since we made the detailed outline. This helped me because I wasn't starting from scratch and I already had most of my ideas written out in sentences. Also, the comments that Dr. D wrote on canvas helped me to see some of the things that I needed to change or work on in my paragraphs.
The hardest part that I'm finding is developing the introduction and conclusion. I am not sure yet how I want to start or end my literary analysis because I feel like those are the most important parts since the beginning has to be good so the reader keeps reading and the end has to be good so the reader is left with something to think about. I also found that the website grammarly helps me a lot to find all of the grammar errors in my paragraphs.

symbolism

Toby and his family started to prepare there thanksgiving dinner. Even though Toby couldn't help much, because his disability, he still tried his best. His mother would hand him a spoon and bring him the something like mash potatoes that could be stirred because he really just wanted to be a part of his family that he felt so distant from. Once every thing was cooked and prepared, Toby felt obligated to stay out of the way of his family because he knew how they felt when he was around him. He hated how everyone felt sorry for him and tried to walk on egg shells when ever he was around, and worst of all, how they looked at him differently then the rest of his family. Thanksgiving; however, was different because he could act like a different person for the day and he couldn't hear any of the offensive things they would say about him. He would pretend as if he was not different from the rest of his family and just try to blend in and not be noticed. He also would take out his hearing aids, so the rude and hurtful things they would say about him wouldn't hurt. This is why Thanksgiving was Toby's favorite holiday.
Ten years later, Toby got word that his mother was very sick. He hadn't been to his mother's house in almost five years now and he didn't know how to feel about that. However, he pushed aside his mixed feelings about this place and bought a plane ticket back home. When he stepped into the kitchen, he was flooded with so many memories of the times he got to help out and feel like he was apart of something, but also the memories of being someone he wasn't and the hatred that was shown to him. He then walked into his mother's bedroom where she lay still, and his hectic family around her bed crying and hugging one another. All he could think was: am I too late? He immediately felt guilty for even having the memories he had and wished he would have come sooner. His family embraced him and seemed genuinely happy to see him which made him wonder if his family would've accepted him for who he really is.

how to make a dog toy

To make this dog toy, you will need two old crew socks, some soft cotton stuffing, duct tape, a dog treat, and a friend. Once you have all of these items, you can fill each sock with an even amount of the stuffing. Make sure you only fill the sock a little bit lower than the top of the socks. once you have done this, put the dog treat into one of the socks. When you put the treat in the sock with the stuffing, try to put it close to the middle of the sock. Then, you enclose the sock with the treat in it with the other sock. This means you first take the sock without the treat and stretch the ends upwards to open it. Then, your friend will put the sock with a treat into the other opened sock. Next, take the duct tape and wrap the socks in it, especially making sure you cover the ends so it does not fall apart.
After making the toy, you can decorate it with markers or sticks or anything else you know your dog enjoys to chew on. Now you can give it to your dog and watch them try to get the treat inside and enjoy them chewing on something other that your furniture!

critical scene from LOTF

In Lord of the Flies, one of the most critical scenes is when Simon is hallucinating and talking to the pig's head on stick. The pig's head is described as the lord of the flies. This scene is so critical because of the ways the author uses the pig's head to symbolize other things. For one, the head represents Beelzebub, or the devil's right hand man. This is a weird metaphor because Beelzebub is depicted as a type of fly and the pig's head is called the lord of the flies because he is surrounded by flies. When Simon is talking to the lord of the flies, he tries to inflict chaos on the island.
Also, as Simon is talking to the lord of the flies, he talks about the beast and how he wants to visit the top of the mountain, so the pig's head responds by saying if he went to the top of the mountain he will ruin the fun, so all of the boys will kill him. This is interesting because he is talking to the lord of the flies in his head, but the pig knows a lot about what is going to occur in future events. This scene also relates to scenes in the bible when Jesus is alone and is very thirsty and is tempted in the dessert by Satan, just like Simon.

thanksgiving

This year for Thanksgiving, my family and I are going to New York City and Boston, Massachusetts. Usually we would spend Thanksgiving break going to our family and extended families houses, but nearly all of our families houses were impacted and destroyed in the flood. My mom thought it would be fun to leave "the flood" behind for a while and what better way to get our minds of the flood then to travel. The other reason we are visiting these cities is so that my sister can tour some of the ivy league colleges.
I think I am going to really miss some of my families Thanksgiving traditions though. We always have a big dinner with my whole family and it is so much fun to eat and enjoy each other's company. This year, everything is different because of the flood and some of my family is in the hospital right now. This year I am still thankful for this experiences because they help me to learn new things and to be a better person.

Caroline's blog-chapter 8 LOTF response

who is your role model?

My role model isn't actually a person. My role model is the future version of me. Some times I do have a role model like Blake Lively or some other famous figure to be a good example through my life, but I always want to try to be even better than them. I try to learn different things from the different people I see through out my day and attempt my best to learn from their mistakes.
If I did though, have to choose one role model, I would choose my uncle. My uncle probably isn't like any other role model because he isn't perfect. He is my role model because he is passionate about what he does and will do what ever it takes to accomplish his goals. He is a drummer and he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue his dreams; even-though, it was a new and scary place far away from his family. A couple of weeks after he moved, he was diagnosed with colon cancer, but that didn't stop him. Now he is a drummer for a popular band in Nashville and has been in remission for almost three years now.

LOTF passage response

passage on PG.83-84

In the passage, Piggy is not worried about this imaginary beast, but the beasts that all the boys are turning into, including himself. They say that the beast would eat pig and they eat pig, so I think that that means that are the beasts themselves and most of the boys either don't understand this or try to dismiss this because they feel it would be better to believe in a fictional beast. They want to believe in this fictional beast because they still have a conscience, and it would be better for them to kill a beast than to kill one of their own. In the next part, Piggy is trying to say that he has the right to speak, because of the conch, but nobody is listening to him which shows hoe there once fun civilization is now corrupting and the rules are being broken.
Later in the passage, Piggy is trying to justify his reasons of why the beast is not real by giving scientific evidence, but all of the other boys are immature and don't exactly understand what Piggy is truly saying. When Piggy is talking about how the beast is not real, he internally realizes that there may be a good reason to be afraid, but not of the beast. They should be afraid of each other.

LOTF response

In the novel, Lord of the Flies, there are many symbols used throughout the novel to represent more than what it truly is. Also, this novel contains allegory which means that throughout this novel there is a literal and figurative side to the story. Also, a major topic that has been appearing a lot so far in thins novel is human nature. Human nature is the idea that everybody has a different way to react and feel about an event.
Some of the main characters, so far in the novel, are Piggy and Ralph. They are the first boys we meet on the island. They are extremely different, and I believe they are each other's foils. I say this because they do and say things that contradict one another and that emphasizes their own traits to the extreme.

human nature

Human nature is the behavioral traits that all human kind shares. Everyone's human nature is different, and it is all flawed in some way. I believe that everyone's human nature has an endless possibility of differences that depends on several factors. Human nature not only describes your reaction to different events in one's life, but also the feelings of someone to a particular person or event. Even though we all have human nature, each individual person depending on their personal experiences.
I believe these things because of personal experiences and from some of the things I have read in the text of  Lord of the Flies. I feel as if everyone's human nature is flawed in some way or another because of the different ways people react to different events in their lives. From the novel, for example, the different ways Piggy and Ralph reacted to the initial idea that there were no adults on the island were different because of their personalities, and they were both flawed. Piggy reacted in a way of shock and fear for his personality is more restrained and practical; whereas, Ralph was ecstatic which says that his personality is more immature and care-free. This tells the reader that both of their human nature is different and flawed in their own ways.

Q2 Week 1 Reading Response

free post- deep water horizon(spoilers)

During Fall break, I went to go see the movie, Deep Water Horizon. This movie is about the BP oil spill that happened in 2010. This oil spill effected many people, animals, communities, families, etc. What had happened was the oil rig exploded, due to the cement that was placed, not being properly tested and dealt with. This means that the people aboard the Deep Water Horizon oil rig could have done something to prevent this oil spill, that is the largest spill of oil in the history of marine oil drilling operations. Once the rig exploded, creating a fire that lasted for about 36 hours until it sank, eleven crew members were killed and about 17 were injured, this is out of the total of about 126 people.
In this movie, the main character is one of the workers during this explosion and oil spill. There is a backstory where you meet his family and get attached to him. All of the crew members are representations of the actual crew members. Once the explosion occurred, the main character goes back into the explosion and tries to save everyone he can. The people who ended up dying were mostly people who got stuck in a room and could not escape. I think that would be the worst case scenario. The only thing that really angered me was that they could have prevented this whole situation. Before watching this movie, I didn't really know what happened to cause the oil spill, but I suspected it was an unavoidable mistake. The people who were in charge did not run the proper tests and did not believe the rest of the crew when they were told there was a problem.

reading response- the martian

Right now, the main character, Mark Watney, is finally in contact with earth after being stranded on mars. The plan is to send another spaceship as soon as they can to rescue him, but the rescue mission is still a while away. Right now, in the story, not much action is happening, so it is difficult to continue to read. There still are some interesting details to think or wonder about though. For example, I wonder if the author is going to allow Watney to survive and be saved in full health or will he almost die or even die before or during the rescue mission?
Another thing I like to think about is how some of the other, minor characters, are feeling about Watney being trapped on mars. Such as his family. They sent him a letter saying like we love and miss you, hope you come home safety, heard you were doing well with your crops, etc., but I wonder what else would be going through their minds that they left out of the letter. If a situation like this ever happened to someone I knew, I would be freaking out and thinking of "what if" questions and the worst possibilities. Maybe his family did not want to alarm him or freak him out by putting there true thoughts about  the situation into this letter.

How to rig the elections, the legal way by the week staff

In this paper, one of the main terms used was gerrymandering. This means to manipulate the boundaries of an electoral  constituency to favor one group or party. This is not a good thing to do because it singles out a majority of one of the parties, so that on certain party will win the election. This allows for politics to choose their voters, instead of voters choosing their politicians. This makes me uneasy about the voting process because you wont know if the elections for your electoral college were "rigged" or not. I think this should be illegal i all cases, instead of certain ones. This is definable a problem that needs to be solved, but there are few, right ways, this issue could be solved by. One way to keep the voting honest, is to have a couple reliable sources to check the census drawn before the district lines are redrawn. If this issue is solved, the votes for each candidate will more more accurate to what the voters actually want. Even though people want this issue to be solved, it is difficult. This is difficult because most politicians will ignore the fact. Also, most attempts to change this, cause a never ending court battle since people fight the fact that it is not technically illegal.

Even though it is difficult situation, there are solutions; such as, using computer data bases to redistrict areas as evenly and fairly as possible. This will make the majority of the voters happy, but may upset the politicians who were using this loophole to their advantage. In one of the paragraphs, In that way?, which is about the fact that even though gerrymandering was used, in most situations, it would still be the same but only with a smaller majority. This is surprising because you think they must know they were losing the election, but instead it is like a security blanket.

free post-family dinner

This Sunday, me and my family had diner together. We had burgers and steaks because my dad cooked out on the grill for us. My cousin, grandma, step brother, dad, and step mom all ate together. It was really fun because I don't get to see that side of my family too often, but since the flood, they have all been staying at my house. This is really hard on me and my family, so it was nice to have a break ad have a nice dinner with all of them.
WE tried not to talk about the flood, so our main topics were homecoming, college, sports and friends. My cousin is a freshmen at LSU this year and she is loving it so far, but she dose not know if the thing she picked to major in is right for her, My step brother is also a freshmen, but in high school like me. His school flooded, but they are still going to have homecoming, just sometime in November or December. It is kind of funny because me, my cousin and my step brother are all at new schools this year.

never let me go-reading response

In this short story, as a reminder, the narrator follows the separation between a couple and their relationship. When I first read this story, I was very confused by the meaning and significance of all of the vivid details used in this short story. Once I reread it again, I initially thought the story had a greater meaning, and that it was all a metaphor. I thought when the story would say things like: the tin foil sparkled, or we smoothed the creases from the wrappers, or our fingertips would touch, until one day they did not; it meant more than the words it was saying. When ever I read some of these phrases, I thought they had a deeper meaning which meant like: the sparkling moments at the beginning of a new relationship, trying to smooth the creases or mistakes i their relationship, and they used to be emotionally close, but now they are closed off to one another.
Even though I like the story with that metaphor, because it means more to me, I also enjoyed the real meaning of this piece. The couple is actually a hoarder and it seemed to me like on of the partners in this relationship persuaded, in a way the other to became addicted to hoarding with them. This story was really weird, but one, not as weird as some of the other stories, and two, I thought it had a more significant meaning to it.

Harrison Bergron

This short story is based in a futuristic utopia where everyone is supposed to be equal. The citizens are given different handicaps to make sure they are all equal to the lowest person in this society. While reading this short story, many questions came to mind as well as before and after reading this story. Most of the questions I had before reading had to do with who is Harrison Bergron?, Why is he so important?, etc. After reading this, I could answer these questions, so they were mostly level one questions. I know this because, I can find out the answers to these questions in the text, for example, the answer to the question: who is Harrison Bergron, can be answered in the story, he was a seven feet tall 14 year old who was a danger to this society because he was extremely smart, tall, and handsome, and he would try to protest the society, and he was George and Hazels child. While I read this passage, there were so many questions that I thought of, and only a few were answered by the end of the passage. Some that were answered sounded like, why were the people handicapped?, who is the "Handicapper General?, why did George keep hearing short bursts of sounds?, why was Hazel crying?, why do the citizens "agree" to be handicapped, etc. By the very end, I could answer all of these questions. But, I also had some questions that were not answered like, how would the handicaps given make the citizens equal since you could tell who was "better" by their handicaps?, or why did the "emperor and empress" kiss the ceiling?
This short story was quite confusing. Usually, when reading short stories, I can find the actual meaning of the story, or lesson that is meant to be learned, but I could not in this story. The only thing I can assume is that it is sort of like a warning for in the future that it is good to keep your talents and individuality. It is not good for society to have everyone equal, or soon, we woul;d have nothing to separate us from who we truly are.

100-word story

Once there was a little girl. Every day, she would ask her father, "May I get a puppy today, Father?" And every day her Father would reply with a firm "No," followed by a long response of how much responsibility a dog is and how she would not want to take care of it after a while, etc. She would always daydream during the time he would spend explaining to her about why she couldn't have a puppy. Today, she daydreamed about how it would be like to have a dog and how cute he would be and how good she would take care of him and so on so forth. The next day, she went inside to ask her Father the same question, but instead, her Mother was there. She proceeded in asking her question anyways and her Mother said, "Of course, anything for you!" So, she finally got herself a puppy, but by that next week it was more of her Mother's responsibility.

how to age gracefully

Dear an eleven year old,
Do not ever be afraid to try anything out of the ordinary. Even if you may be scared to try or because it is not considered to be the cool thing to do. Also, always act yourself. I know this is probably the most cliche line you have probably ever heard, but it is also the best thing to go by. If you don't act yourself, you may attract the wrong friends or crowd that is not good to hang out with because they will either betray you in some way, get you in trouble, ruin your reputation, use you, or all of the above. When you act like your weird self, you will end up meeting some really amazing people. Even though it may not seem that way for a while, you will end up meeting your best friend in an unexpected situation caused by a decision that you cannot be afraid to make.
When I was younger, I was usually that weird kid who just played by themselves at recess and didn't have too many friends. I soon realized that I had two options for a choice that would change me. I could either change myself so that I could fit in with everyone else, or be okay with standing out, but having to wait for a friend. I choose to be different and that attracted the right group of friends that helped me with my confidence, etc. So, never be afraid to make that decision because you really never know how it will turn out.

Danny- my literacy narrative

personal narrative

My personal narrative is about the time I got a blister from doing the monkey bars when I was in second grade. After this occurred, I met my best friend that is still my best friend today. Throughout this essay, It was really hard to remember, first of all, because it was a smaller event that happened a while ago, and because it was a tough time in my childhood. The process of writing this was actually sort of simple, because right when I was told that we were doing a personal narrative, and what a personal narrative was, I automatically came up with two ideas. I had to choose between the time I got the blister on the monkey bars, which is the one I chose, and the time I competed in cheer while I had a broken wrist. In the end, I felt as if the one I chose had a bigger significance that really changed me for the better.
Even though this event happened a long time ago in my life span, when ever I started to write about this event, the memories flowed out of my head and straight onto the paper. The hardest part for me was to share this when we did the peer reviews and editing. It was sad to remember the hard events that I went to, but at the same time, it was pretty amazing to remember the events that lead to the meeting of my best friend. It was also quite enjoyable because I shared my essay with my friend and it was fun to remember all of the memories we had together.

9/11

September 11, 2001
On September 11, 2001, the United States was shaken down to its core. We were attacked by terrorists planes, which flew into some important buildings throughout the United States, such as the twin towers. This attack not only ruined buildings, but it also ruined the lives of many. Killing nearly 3,000 people and injuring more than 6,000. Nineteen terrorists, associated with Al-Qaeda, hijacked four planes that flew into the pentagon, two into the world trade center towers and the fourth crashed into a field.
The first flight, at 8:45 a.m., flew into the north tower of the World Trade Center. In this crash, the plane hit around the eightieth floor of this building. When this happened, it instantly killed everyone on that floor and the floors right around. Also, the building collapsed which killed many more. People were trapped on all levels of the building just praying to be saved. Later, about eighteen minutes later, the second plane hit the south tower. This flight hit around the sixtieth floor. Only eighteen people walked away from the attacks on the World Trade Center. The next plane crashed into pentagon at 9:45. About 125 people in the building were killed and 64 on board. The fourth and final plane crashed into an open field in Pennsylvania at 10:10 a.m. This crash killed everyone on board. This plane was meant to be hijacked by the terrorists and flown into an unknown place, but possibly somewhere like the White House. Why this did not happen is because the passengers fought the terrorists who were trying to hijack the plane. They then knew they would have to crash, so they attempted to crash in a place where there were no civilians that could be in the way.

Friends

Friends
This past weekend, I got together with some of my friends from my old school. I had not seen some of them since last school year had ended, It was so much fun to catch up with all these people. I loved hearing about how school was going and all of their new friends. I am so glad that i am still in touch with them because I could not imagine my life with out them all in it. We all went to Perkins Rowe to eat and see a movie.
Some of my friends are on the cheer team at their high school, so it was really neat to hear about the things they are doing and sort of compare them to the things I am. One of my best friends, in particular, told me all about their teachers and new experiences that high school brings. It was really interesting, to me to see how everyone was adjusting. Everyone seemed to be doing well so far in high school. I keep thinking about how weird it is to not be going to school with some of them because some of us have been to school together for over nine years.

We Were Liars (possible spoilers)

We Were Liars

We Were Liars, by E. Lockhart, was my second book that I read this summer. To briefly summarize, this book is about a rich family named the Sinclairs. In this family they are pretty much just sweeping all of their life's problems under the rug, so anything that other people see is a perfect family. In reality, they are jut as messed up as the rest of us and maybe even more. One of the granddaughters of this family is Caddy. You learn at the beginning that she visits, along with the rest of her family, her grandparents private island, where, when shes fifteen, has an accident that gives her headaches and she's never the same again. At first when reading this book, I got very flustered over the fact that Caddy, the narrator, never really goes into detail about her accident. Later on, you find out that she is has been an unreliable narrator pretty much the entire time she has been telling you her story. It does explain, near the end what happened in her accident and to be honest I was not expecting it at all. I loved how Caddy was an unreliable narrator and how she would explain things that her and her cousins did and it did not make complete sense at first so I only thought she had a few issues.

My favorite part about this book was all of the twists and turns that you take with this family. Another thing I liked was how the author put Caddy's hurt and felling's into extremely detailed words, almost like she was personifying her emotions. Also I liked how this novel felt as if is tried to relate it to some of the things we see in our everyday lives. The Sinclairs act as if they are perfect, which makes most everyone else around them feel jealous, but, in reality, everyone has flaws. Today, people seem to get rapped up in having this perfect life with all the money and possessions they can get, and then they feel if they have all of that, then they can be happy. In reality, it you aren't happy with the way your living now, then even a billion dollars cannot help you tomorrow.

Me
My name is Kaelyn Smith and this is my first year at Episcopal. Last year, and for eight years before that, I went to St. George School. Pretty much all of my friends from St. George went to St. Joseph's Academy. Even though they still live quite close, it feels as if were in separate places now, even though we just attend two different high schools. I have an older sister who is a junior this year at SJA, so it's pretty nice to be able to bug her about homework questions, etc. I also have a step brother who is in ninth grade, but he goes to Denham Springs high school. My sister, Paige, and my brother, Luke, were very supportive of me going to Episcopal. On my first day here, everyone was so welcoming and nice and I am so glad that I choose to come here. Also, for my birthday, I got two puppies named Lady and Tramp.
At St. George, I played volleyball and cheer. I have also always been in live with gymnastics, but was never offered the chance to compete. I think it would be really fun to do some more sports next year. This year I am only doing cheer. I think that it is so much fun, but I might do competitive cheer next year.

      The Selection

In this novel, a girl named America is living with her family the futuristic country of Illea. in Illea, they have kings and queens and cast systems. The prince holds a competition to find his bride called the selection, and America gets chosen to compete.

One thing I really liked in this novel was how the narrator described the situations that were occurring throughout the novel. i also really liked the time it was set in. with the futuristic society, there were casts systems and i found that quite interesting how the author sort of played with that and throughout the novel of how history repeats itself.

Also, in the novel, America already has a secret boyfriend in her home town, so she is hesitant to compete in the selection. What surprised me was the irony. America and her boyfriend always thought as if they would always be together, but then during the selection, she fell in love with someone else. Her boyfriend and her end up crossing paths once again and they still feel as if there are some lingering feelings between them. After that, America is left with that choice. Something that surprised me was when the prince told America he had feelings for her, but America said they would only be friends. Then, when America told the prince she was falling in love with him, he could not say the same about her.

This novel leaves you wanting more, so I am really glad that there are many more books in this series.
